GreenMED Project Featured by CINEA – A Recognition of Excellence

The GreenMED project is honoured to be featured by CINEA – the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) – as a flagship initiative for green shipping pathways in the Mediterranean. This feature comes at a pivotal moment, as GreenMED advances towards the final stages of implementation.

Driving the Clean Energy Transition in Mediterranean Shipping

GreenMED addresses the urgent need for decarbonisation in the Mediterranean Sea basin by delivering scenario-based pathways for a clean energy transition. At its core, the project is establishing the Mediterranean Sustainable Shipping Observatory (MSSO), a regional shipping decarbonisation hub, for the Eastern and wider Mediterranean, designed to serve ship owners, ports, policymakers, energy and fuel investors, and the broader maritime community.

Through the MSSO, GreenMED is building a robust knowledge base, mapping shipping energy demand and fuel supply chains, and evaluating emerging alternative low-carbon fuels as pathways towards zero-emission shipping. The Observatory will provide data-driven insights, decision-support tools, and foresight studies to guide investment and policy decisions, fully aligned with the EU Green Deal, the FuelEU Maritime and AFIR Regulations, and the integration of shipping into the EU ETS.

A Strong Network of Partners

The GreenMED consortium brings together leading expertise across the Mediterranean:

  • The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) – Coordinator
  • The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI)
  • MarineTraffic, as now part of Kpler
  • The Fundación Valenciaport (VPF)
  • The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT)

The project also collaborates with fellow EU-funded projects, GREEN MARINE MED and POWER4MED, while aligning with initiatives such as Waterborne Transport Platform (TP), the WestMED Initiative and its Technical Group on Green Shipping, and the newly established Shipbuilding Alternative Fuels Propulsion Systems Alliance (SAFA).

Looking Ahead

As GreenMED progresses into its final year, the consortium is preparing for the launch of the MSSO interactive tools, which will support stakeholders in evaluating decarbonisation options, planning infrastructure, and adapting fleets to meet future energy demands.

GreenMED is not only a scientific and technical endeavour but also a policy-shaping and community-building initiative, creating synergies across both shores of the Mediterranean to foster cooperation, innovation, and regional alignment.

Together, we are powering a greener, more resilient future for Mediterranean shipping.
